The People
The People of Africa Unveiled
The people of Africa Unveiled are what make this organization a reality. Each member is committed to making a difference in the world and enriching lives. By studying the culture surrounding Kenya, and organizing fundraisers, we are proudly contributing to the success of the region.

Sheila Morris
I come from a legacy where community members made sure everyone in the village was sheltered, fed & protected. When my grandparents immigrated, they carried community building traditions into every aspect of their new life. My favorite inheritance from these principles is my skill in executing meals for large gatherings. At 48 Hours of Hunger, Harvest Fest, or Jazz Night Dinner, I’m most happily found in the kitchen.
Both of my daughters participated in the first “African Cuisine: 48 hours of Hunger” and came home permanently and positively changed. At the same time, Greg Mortensen, author of Three Cups of Tea, spoke in Leavenworth on the value of education in promoting peace. Hearing his story brought home
to me that we have our own locally grown organization right here that could blossom to similar proportions.
I have used my organizational skills in fundraising for our school district’s band program for 10 years, and it was a natural leap to expand into Africa Unveiled. My volunteer habits are eclectic, ranging from the Mountaineers Club, Sustainable Leavenworth, to providing massage at sporting events. The defining criteria for me is advocating for children, for their well being and future growth.
I have seen over and over the power of one; one person, one action, one meeting; each begins a ripple effect that spreads around the world. Look at all the NGOs that are operated by just one person focusing on one
outcome! I am most grateful to all the people in our village who repeatedly say, “Yes!” to our fundraising invitations.
Shannon Armstrong
Having lived in the Middle East for 18 years, Shannon has been active in non-profit groups for 20+ years, especially Africa Unveiled. Her interests are accentuated by her degrees in education (reading K-12, education K-12, and ESL (K-16). Belief in the possibility of a better life for the survivors of the third world has inspired her to become and “answer” to the situations rather than a “reader” of the doom.
